GroupVAN, in Plain English
A non-technical look at GroupVAN — the technology that connects APSG members to modern tools, keeps parts transactions fast and reliable, and turns everyday business into useful insight.
Most of the people who depend on GroupVAN every day never see it — and that’s exactly the point.
When a counter rep at one of our distributors checks whether a part is in stock, prices it, and places an order, GroupVAN is the technology working quietly in the background to make that happen in real time. Across the group, it moves hundreds of millions of dollars in parts orders every year between members of the Automotive Parts Services Group (APSG) and the modern tools that serve their business.
Here’s what it is, why it matters, and where it’s headed — without the engineering jargon.
The simple idea
The automotive parts business runs on a patchwork of software. Different distributors use different systems, bought at different times, that don’t naturally talk to one another. Connecting them used to mean slow, expensive, one-off technology projects — when it was possible at all.
GroupVAN is the translator that sits in the middle. A request can come in from one system and be delivered to another in whatever “language” that system understands, then translated back. Everyone keeps the tools they already rely on, and they all work together as a single network — so members get the upside of a modern, connected network without the cost, downtime, or risk of ripping out systems they’ve already invested in.
Think of it as one reliable front door to the whole group — a door any member or technology partner can knock on and be understood.
Speed that wins sales
In this business, speed is money. When a customer is standing at the counter or waiting on the phone, the rep who can say “yes, we have it, here’s the price” first is the one who makes the sale.
GroupVAN is built to be nearly invisible: it adds only a sliver of time to each request and then gets out of the way. Paired with Parts Manager, our own point-of-sale and warehouse system, a member can answer a live availability-and-price check in a fraction of a second. Many of the legacy systems that still dominate the industry take seconds to do the same thing. Multiplied across thousands of lookups a day, that gap adds up to real revenue and stronger customer loyalty.
Rebuilt to be lean
A few years ago we rebuilt GroupVAN from the ground up with one goal: keep it simple, fast, and dependable. It runs faster than the system it replaced, costs far less to operate, and is simple enough that we can ship improvements in minutes. It’s the kind of infrastructure you want — boringly reliable, quietly doing its job.
Open for partners to build on
Because GroupVAN is well-documented and speaks common industry standards, it isn’t only for us. Technology partners and members can build their own apps, websites, and storefronts on top of the very same services we use — extending what the network can do without anyone having to reinvent the plumbing.
Turning everyday transactions into insight
Every order and inquiry flows through one place, so GroupVAN leaves behind a clean record of what’s happening across the network. We turn that into a clear picture of the business: which parts are in demand, how pricing and availability are trending, and where sales are slipping away to out-of-stocks. We’re now piloting the next step — combining that history with what we know about the vehicles on the road to forecast demand and suggest what each location should stock next. It all adds up to sharper decisions with less guesswork.
What’s coming next
The next chapter is Catalog, a modern parts-shopping and ordering experience we’re building on top of GroupVAN. It’s designed to make finding the right part — by part number, vehicle, license plate, or VIN — fast and intuitive. It isn’t released yet, but it’s a preview of what becomes possible once the foundation underneath is this solid.
The bottom line
GroupVAN is the quiet infrastructure beneath a growing share of our network’s commerce. It connects everyone’s systems, keeps transactions fast and reliable, opens the door to partners, and turns everyday business into useful insight. For independent distributors, it’s a way to compete with anyone — together.
